The power factor is one of the most common technical indicators of our electrical and lighting products. So what is the power factor? Let's start with the alternating current system. In the direct current circuit, the voltage is constant, and the power is always equal to the voltage times the current; in alternating current, the voltage is in the form of sine wave changes. So the question is, does the current change in sync with the voltage? When we use incandescent lamps or electric water heaters, the voltage and current are perfectly matched. However, in complex circuits, it is actually very difficult fit each other. If the voltage and current are not synchronized, then the power we get by multiplying the voltage by the current is different from the actual power. In order to reflect this difference, we introduce the concept of power factor. The power factor is the useful power divided by the nominal power calculated using current and voltage. In our AC circuit, comparing of two appliances with the same wattage, the one with higher power factor, the current in the circuit will be smaller, and on the contrary, another will cause a larger current in the circuit. High currents can cause a lot of waste. So if we use appliances with a high power factor, the efficiency of the circuit will be higher.
Low Wattage appliances themselves have very small currents, and even if the power factor is very low, the burden on the circuit is minimal. Usually the indoor residential Lights, such as SEKURO LED Ceiling Lights SKRF205R, which are in small wattage, so we don't care much about their Power Factor.
while the high wattage appliances will have a greater impact. For example, the industrial lights such as SKHU Series, we need to make sure the working power factor is no less than 0.9.
Draw a conclusion, if the wattage of the product is very small, we will not pay special attention to the power factor, but if the power is greater than a certain value (our basic standard is 30 watts) we tend to use high power factor electrical products.
Another issue of interest to us is that if we use low power factor appliances and the current in the circuit increases, will the total power consumption measured by the meter increase? Will we pay more for it? Fortunately, the Watt Meter generally records the active power. So even if your electrical power factor is low, it won't cost you more.
